Acid reflux is a condition where your stomach acid churns up from your stomach into your esophagus. It can be extremely uncomfortable, as it causes a burning sensation in your chest and throat. If left untreated, it can lead to more serious conditions, up to and including cancer. Fear not, for acid reflux help is readily available.

Acid reflux can't be cured in the sense that the root cause of acid reflux is not exactly known. When the root cause is not known, it can't be targeted, and therefore can't be cured. However, acid reflux help can treat the symptoms and keep them at bay. Things that you can do for acid reflux help include taking medication, changing diet, modifying lifestyle, and managing stress. If you have a mild case of acid reflux, very minor changes in diet and lifestyle are all you might need.

One course of acid reflux help is medication. The strength, type, and frequency of medication depend on the severity of the acid reflux and the heartburn that goes with it. If the heartburn is a recurring and serious problem, medications including histamine antagonists might be prescribed. These antagonists work to keep the stomach from secreting acid that is triggered by gastrin and histamine. There are new medications available for acid reflux help as well. Proton pump inhibitors block the final step in acid production. Another group of medication, called prokinetic agents, do not block or inhibit acid production. Rather, they help to push through the stomach faster by increasing the pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter.

Outside of medication, changes in lifestyle can bring acid reflux help. Exercise is one of the best things you can do, not only for acid reflux help, but for overall health. Exercise helps with acid reflux because it aids in speeding digestion. When digestion is slowed, it increases pressure in the gastric area and can cause acid to reflux into the esophagus.

When you exercise to lose weight, you also minimize or eliminate another culprit of acid reflux; namely, being overweight. Combined with a healthy diet, devoid of highly acidic and fatty foods, weight reduction is one of the best things you can do for yourself. You need not resort to bland and tasteless food. Finding new and creative ways to prepare your favorite foods can stimulate your palate and liven up your routine. When you combine a sensible diet regimen with an exercise program, you reap all the health benefits along with acid reflux relief.

Specialized equipment can help alleviate symptoms as well. There are pillows available to keep heartburn at bay. Shaped like wedges, these pillows keep your head higher than the stomach to keep the acid from creeping up and reducing stomach pressure.
