Like other conditions such as colds, symptoms can be treated but not cured. There is no cure for the common cold, but you can treat the sneezing and runny noses. Such is also the case with acid reflux. There is no cure for acid reflux, but there are treatments available for its symptoms.

One of the main symptoms of acid reflux is heartburn, characterized by an uncomfortable and burning sensation in the chest or throat. Advanced heartburn can cause or exacerbate other conditions, such as sore throats, swallowing problems, upset stomach, ulcers, tooth erosion, and bad breath. Chronic heartburn can cause damage to the esophagus.

If you’re suffering from these symptoms, you can look into acid reflux treatment solutions for help. One of the better acid reflux treatment options available is to undertake an exercise program. Exercise aids the digestive process. When digestion is slow in emptying the stomach, it can lead to increased gastric pressure, which in turn leads to reflux. Exercise also helps you lose weight permanently. Being overweight can aggravate acid reflux because of the pressure it places on your abdominal area. Losing weight will all but eliminate this from being a concern.

Another fantastic acid reflux treatment is to modify your diet. There seems to be a direct correlation between diet and heartburn. Certain foods seem to trigger heartburn, or make it worse. These include fatty foods such as bacon or rib roasts. Also included are highly acidic foods, such as tomato-based foods like tomato sauce and ketchup. Chocolate is a culprit, as is caffeine. Acid reflux treatment should include a change in diet to one that features lower-fat and non-spicy food. Allowed foods are leafy greens, broccoli, bananas, turkey, egg whites, and sirloin steaks, among other things. Acid reflux treatment should also include spacing out your meals over 5 or 6 meals throughout the day, as opposed to 3 large ones. This will keep your stomach less full at each sitting, reducing pressure and allowing for a more efficient digestive process. As well, many popular weight-reduction regimens advocate the spread-out small meal theory.

After eating, acid reflux treatment should include a change in behaviors that rarely enter our consciousness. For example, after meals, you should avoid lying down or any sort of posture that might put some pressure on your abdominal area. Don’t lie down within 2 hours of eating to allow the digestive process to run its course. At night, keep your head elevated above your midsection. Try using more than one pillow or purchase a specially-shaped wedge pillow to keep your head up.

As a last resort, acid reflux treatment might be best served by medication, whether over-the-counter or prescription. Either way, consult your physician or other medical professional before beginning a treatment program to ensure that it doesn’t interfere with any other health conditions you might have.
